










Head Start
Greene Lamp, Inc. Head Start is a comprehensive child development program
serving low-income three and four year old children and their families in
Lenoir and Greene Counties. Priority is given to four-year olds. In
2003-2004, Head Start services will be provided to 277 children and their
families. The program's major goal is to provide a child development program
that will encompass educational, medical, dental, nutritional, mental
health, social services, and parent needs, as they relate to the individual
child, his/her family and community. Special needs children are mainstreamed
with other children. Head Start receives $1.5 million in federal funding
from the Department of Health and Human Services a 20% local match is
provided by local agencies, local vendors, and volunteers. The Head Start
project provides full day services including Wrap Around (before and after
the Head Start day). The Wrap Around component is funded with Federal
pass-through funds to the NC Department of Health and Human Services.
Parents secure child care vouchers through local Departments of Social
Services for extended day services
